This year the winter period was significantly longer in Bulgaria. Farmers were only able to plant sunflowers very late. Spring was untypically cold, and in higher altitudes, we saw snow in April. At the beginning of May until mid of June we experienced heavy rain and occasionally hailstorms. Temperature differed from 10° at night to 28° Celsius (+50° to +83° F) around midday.

The demand for old crop Bulgarian sunflower seed and products ist very strong. The buyers are looking for prompt shipments and need the product as soon as possible, hitting the water. Some Bulgarian de-hullers are short in raw material and need additional supply in July and August 2020. Unfortunately, the raw material is not there or very expensive, and we see a two weeks delay before the new crop harvest will start.

In Xingjiang, the Chinese farmers have started two weeks earlier with plantings and almost finished it. In Gansu and Inner Mongolia, the plantings are still progressing and will complete the first half of June 2020.
In Heilongjiang, farmers just started to plant, and up in the north close to the Russian border, they will begin to end in June 2020.

We are referring to our report from yesterday. There is more and more evidence in the market that sunflower kernels and chips etc. will not be traded on the same price level in EURO as in the previous year.

In Bulgaria, the sowing period is in full swing. Currently, about 70 percent of all fields are planted. According to COCERAL Crop Forecast, 743.000 ha in Bulgaria should be planted in 2020. That would account for 12.000 ha or 1,6 percent less than last year (755.000 ha). The forecasted yields will be 2.400 kg/ha, about 4 percent (100 kg/ha) less than in the previous year.
